At Stack Overflow, we help millions of developers and technologists find answers, learn new skills, and build better software every day. We’re also bringing that same trusted knowledge experience into the enterprise through Stack Internal, our AI-powered knowledge platform that helps organizations capture, share, and discover institutional knowledge more effectively.
Our Data Science team plays a key role in shaping these experiences — using data, machine learning, and large language models to power smarter products and more intuitive discovery. We’re looking for a Data Scientist who’s excited about applying advanced ML and NLP techniques at scale, partnering closely with product and engineering teams, and helping define the future of knowledge discovery in the AI era.
In this role, you’ll work on high-impact initiatives that improve how users find and interact with information across both Stack Overflow and Stack Internal. You’ll build and optimize machine learning systems, influence product strategy through data, and mentor other data scientists along the way.
What You’ll Do
- Design, build, and deploy machine learning solutions — including data pipelines, model training workflows, and LLM-powered experiences
- Improve the performance, reliability, and accuracy of large language models in production environments
- Define and track meaningful metrics that help us better understand user behavior and product impact
- Partner cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and business stakeholders to identify opportunities where data and AI can drive innovation
- Build and maintain large-scale datasets that support advanced analytics and machine learning applications
- Develop tools, models, and experimentation frameworks that help accelerate product development and decision-making
- Serve as a technical thought leader, helping shape our approach to data science and AI across the company
- Mentor and support other data scientists, contributing to a collaborative and growth-oriented team culture
What We’re Looking For
- Hands-on experience working with large-scale LLMs and modern ML systems in production
- 3+ years of experience building and optimizing machine learning or NLP models
- Strong analytical skills, especially when working with large or unstructured datasets
- Experience mentoring or leading other data scientists, with a genuine interest in helping teammates grow
- A self-starter who thrives with autonomy and enjoys exploring creative solutions to complex problems
- Excellent communication skills — able to translate technical insights into business impact
- Strong problem-solving instincts and a passion for building products powered by data and AI
What you’ll get in return:
- Competitive Base Salary
- Generous paid vacation
- Generous parental leave (16 weeks at 100% pay), family care leave, and unlimited sick days
- Industry-leading health benefits that are applicable per country of residence for all our full-time employees
- Company-paid Life Insurance
- Home Internet stipend
- Professional allocation for your growth and development
- One-time allowance to assist with your home office setup
- Company-paid access to Calm, Bravely, LinkedIn Learning, MyAcademy and Overdrive
